Susan Laney of Laney Contemporary wearing a SANDOZIA dress prototype in “hawkmoth + shampoo ginger” looking so elegant!

saaABMB15 andres bedoya
For an artist whose work appears incredibly minimal or extremely intricate (or both?), but either way, puts a LOT of work into their work - like fingers to the bone, "the no-hands award" goes to Andres Bedoya.
Hope your mitts are on the mend. Great showing at Gonzalez y Gonzalez at Untitled Art Fair.
sandoz art awards
Old program - giving out awards - new name: Sandoz Art Awards. Like the Swiss Art Awards, I have 11 awards (or more) to bestow. While I don't offer winners 25,000 CHF and an artist residency in Mexico (!), the gallery, person or piece of art does have a portrait or drawing made in homage to the achievement.
naughty or nice?
This year, for those deserving, I'm recommending paintings - always. I'm also suggesting works on paper as they are often a very unique and unusual offering of the artist's process and presentation. They travel light, safely and cheaply. Last, cost of this work tends to come in slightly lower than those on more substantial substrates.
I have a number of smaller works on paper available on SANDOZIA. You may consider some mid to large scale works through the Spalding Nix Fine Art shop on 1st dibs. I also have some very large works (8 feet plus) at the studio. If you wish to inquire about these, please call or email me.
For the naughty set: coal. It's a traditional and classic way to communicate the required message. For 2015, artist made stockings in paper, fabric or upcycled materials are de rigueur. Maybe you are just the artist?
stitchin' by the dock of the bay
Stitch-n-fish? File these puns under "same old jokes." What's not punny or funny; the privilege of sitting with the boys while they fish, Lego, analyze the world (and bicker) while the tide and the season shift.
making a cactus garden
Seeing cacti everywhere. And making a series of squares featuring cactus with remnants from the 612x912 artist residency at SixTwelve in Oklahoma City. I saw a ton of cactus there. One ton!
On the subject, that seems to be the theme for this summer, here's a great quote from dancer Katherine Dunham:
That's it, people! Something has got to go on!
driftwood + trees painting
Now available through Spalding Nix Fine Art, "driftwood + trees" measures 38" x 48" and is based on the Cumberland Island landscape. Its colors follow the palette of a recent Savannah historic district town home design and build completed by author, creative director Libbie Summers.
612x912: campers
SixTwelve's "Art Walk" 4-12 year old set tackles materials, formal aspects and concepting with enthusiasm and diligence.
612 x 912
Starting tomorrow, SixTwelve of Oklahoma City hosts me as an instructor, artist-in-residence and consultant on programming and facilities and operations development for their artist residency program.
The community center offers camps focussing on creativity and sustainability. The center's residency exchange program brings one artist from Oklahoma City to Savannah and one from Savannah to Oklahoma. I'm thrilled and honored to participate.
During the first "Art Walk" week, I will instruct in color theory, formalism and creating works using repurposed fibers-based materials. Campers exhibit their pieces Friday, June 5th.
The second week, "Garden Camp", community members of any age are invited to workshop with me while I create fibers works featuring Oklahoma flora to be displayed at the end of camp week vernissage on June 12.
During these sessions, I will discuss contemporary arts and arts business issues, developing course content and anything else that the group wishes to discuss. If anyone wishes to studio assist/intern this week, please contact me using this site. If you wish to join as a "student", there are two or three sessions each day: 9-12, 1-3 and 4-6 (except for Friday, June 12). Please contact me or SixTwelve if you have questions.
magnolia portait
Mother Nature remains the best painter and engineer. This magnolia bloom smelled so strongly and its petals stood as a model for the most luxurious bridal silk.
freSH laundry
Enough with the dirty laundry. Made of repurposed fabrics, these abstracted botanicals remind us of the first swells and sounds of spring. While the size matches a typical dish towel, these are not your momma's kitchen linens.
More "freSH" showing May 1-9 at 1704Lincoln, Savannah, GA, 31401.
art opening at 1704Lincoln
Blanche Nettles Powers curates, hosts and shows in a group exhibition featuring new works by Rosewood and 1704Lincoln alumni titled "freSH". On May Day or Beltane, join up at Lincoln and 33rd from 6-8 p.m. to see what the SH in the fresh is all about.
fibers rag flag flying
I didn't realize how much work you can get done on vacation. (It makes you wonder.) I spent a lot of the week on the kayak stitching while other people fished (and other rhyming activities). So relaxing.
mayo, florida
Bits of Mayo preserve what is precious and distinctly American. You can enjoy the peculiarities and the particulars.
Seating outside of a bait shop whose proprietor offers two dollars a foot for rattlesnake. I wouldn't know if that's dead or alive rattlers.
crochet craze
This business keeps one from doing any other kind of business!
in the studio
Working for Flannery. After all, it's camellia season. And Flannery Season.
not pipes
These are paintings on Tyvek folded into the shape of pipes. I'm not sure how many layers of art history joking this is; a lot.
seven years
I've posted 2,055 times over these seven years starting on November 1st, 2006. That's crazy - like life. It's been a full gallop of ups and downs - haha (haha as George Saunders would write). Thank goodness for the full entertainment and engagement of looking at world, thinking about it and, of course, making stuff. I'm so content to work and live on this little farm for another seven. No seventh inning stretch. No itch.
The
writer(artist) should never be ashamed of staring. There is nothing that does not require his attention. - Flannery O'Connor
Much gratitude to those that inspire, teach, lead, challenge and spur me on a daily basis (with some of you working it on a minute to minute basis).
oh, happy day!
